Chinese Medicine Times recently published a great article about the herb ginseng. One focus of the article was ginseng’s potential use for weight loss and diabetes control. They cite three different studies done in animals that showed improved weight loss and/or blood sugar control in groups that were treated with ginseng.
Ginseng has also been used and studied for many other conditions. Here are just some of the findings:
- Ginseng has an effect on the adrenal glands, aiding the body during physical or emotional stress.
- It relieves fatigue and improves stamina.
- It promotes oxygen flow to the brain.
Like any Chinese herb, ginseng should only be taken after consulting with a Licensed Acupuncturist who also specializes in herbal formulas. If you live in Worcester County, please feel free to contact us  for more information.

Getting healthy is always at the top of New Year’s resolution lists, whether the goal be to quit smoking, lose weight, or manage stress. However, many people are discouraged because they have attempted these resolutions before, without success.
Maybe 2009 can be your year to try something new. If you have been curious about how acupuncture can help you, you’re not alone. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently released the results of a 2007 survey, which showed that about 38% of adults have tried some form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). A 2002 NIH survey stated that 8.2 million American adults had used acupuncture, while a 2008 review of clinical studies concluded acupuncture treatments to be safe for children.
Please feel free to contact our office to find out if acupuncture may be right for you.
Incidentally, you can take care of a couple of other resolutions by choosing a community acupuncture practice, like River Valley Acupuncture, as your holistic care provider. Yesterday was our first day open in our new office, and it was better than I could have hoped. I will get back to posting health articles next week, but first I have to take a moment to thank everyone who made this transition possible.
Thank you to my fabulous family, for all of the moral support and help with the logistics (including a lot of painting). Of course, thank you to my wonderful patients who stuck by me with the change—some of you were as excited as I was about the move.
Thanks to Terri Smith at Renova, my former office; I was sad to leave and I am so grateful for all of your help as I was starting up. And, thank you to M&I realty, my new landlords, and to the other businesses in the building, who have already been so friendly to a newcomer.
Happy New Year, everyone! Best wishes for a wonderful year ahead!
